We are seeking a Therapist Enterostomal (RN) - Enterostomal Therapy and Wound Care that will apply knowledge drawn from a broad in-depth education in the social and physical sciences in assessing, planning, ordering, giving delegating teaching and supervising nursing care of patients undergoing radical bowel and bladder surgical procedures to promote the patient's return to a condition of optimal health and independence. The ET will assess and plan the wound care for patients referred by a physician to optimize the patient's wound healing. The ET is responsible for developing the expertise of the nursing staff in acute direct-care situations as well as in assessing the educational needs of wound and ostomy patients and their families and the nursing staff caring for them. The ET also functions as an educator and consultant for community outreach programs directed to the care of persons with ostomies. The ET scope of practice includes inpatient and outpatient management of wound care, continence, and ostomy care. Authority and responsibility for these programs extends over twenty-four hours.
In this position you will have the following responsibilities:
Assess the age specific physical, psychological, and social dimensions of referred patients, and makes appropriate nursing diagnoses related to clinical specialty; documents and communicates information to other patient care providers
Perform patient assessment and intervention in symptom control
Establish a formal written plan of care for referred patients, documents specific nursing orders, and develops goals specifying expected outcomes of intervention as appropriate to complexity of patient need
Assess health knowledge and learning abilities of patient and family; assesses the educational needs of the patient and family and develops appropriate plans for teaching
Utilize available resources and consults as necessary with members of the health care team in planning and developing individualized teaching and discharge plans
Identify educational needs; and plans and implements educational programs for staff members caring for patients with ostomies, complex wounds, draining and fistula, and incontinence problems
Function as a knowledgeable resource for St. Vincent’s nursing staff, other hospitals, schools of nursing, clinics, and physicians within scope of practice
Maintain professional relationship with contracted suppliers and manufacturers to ensure quality of service to patients within scope of practice
Work closely with Central Processing, Distribution, and Surgery to coordinate availability of needed equipment
Participate in product evaluations of new equipment and supplies related to scope of practice. Provides written feedback upon completion of evaluations
Review literature, methodology, outcomes, and implications of nursing research, and disseminates this information to nursing and medical staff through written materials and in-service training
Participate in Hospital committees, Regional ET meetings, and decisions on standards of practice appropriate to clinical specialty
Attend continuing education programs and stays current with professional literature to enhance knowledge, skills, and competence in clinical specialty
Required qualifications for this position include:
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
Current registered nurse license in the State of Oregon
Certification as an Enterostomal Therapist by the Wound Ostomy Continence Nursing Certification Board (WOCN) or Association for Advanced Wound Care (CWS)
2 years Nursing experience with knowledge of and exposure to ostomy, wound care and continence
Experience using personal computer in Windows environment
